Delete your Yappit data
This page covers both: removing individual things you posted, and deleting your whole Yappit account. You do not need to delete your account to remove something you posted.
Deleting individual Yaps, comments or messages
You do not have to delete your whole account to remove something. In the app you can delete any of your own Yaps or comments, unsend a message, and clear a conversation, at any time.
Deleting your whole account — in the app (fastest)
Open Yappit → Settings → Delete Account → confirm. Your account is deleted right away.
If you can't open the app
Yappit has no password, and joining does not require an email address, so we cannot identify you from an email alone. What to do depends on whether you added a recovery email to your account:
- If you added a recovery email: install Yappit on your new phone and choose Restore account. Enter that address, enter the code we send you, and your account moves to the new phone. You can then delete it from Settings → Delete Account.
- If you did not add a recovery email: email support.yappit@gmail.com with the subject "Delete my account" and tell us your Yappit username and roughly when you joined. We will ask you for whatever else we need to be confident the account is yours before we delete anything — an anonymous app has to be careful here, because deleting the wrong account on request would be a way to attack someone.
What is deleted
- Your account and profile.
- Your votes, your rewards and your notifications.
- Your direct messages, and the conversations they belong to.
- Your recovery email address, if you added one.
What stays, without your name on it
Your Yaps and comments are not deleted. They are part of threads other people took part in, and removing them would remove other people's replies with them. They stay where they are, with your name taken off: they show a grey ghost and read as a deleted account, and nothing on them links back to you.
What may be retained
We may retain limited information where required for safety, abuse prevention, or legal obligations (for example, records related to reported abuse). Retained data is kept only as long as necessary.
